As an MBTA employee I will not apologize for my salary or my benefits package. Nor, will I debate the extraordinary price of gas. However, with American corporate greed and companies like Enron, Fidelity and Haliburton making no attempt to provide for the older Americans or the average American worker there is a lot to be jealous of for those who are not fortunate enough to have a coveted position at the T, MassPike, MWRA etc. As for privitization - go right ahead because I know I would not let my family on a mass transport system run by an ousourced company. Like every other big American company, the Commonwealth's buses and trains would be run by an underpaid, overworked worker in Mumbai controlling everything via a state of the art GPS system. So, this winter when you car is snowed in and you trudge all the way to the bus stop or Sullivan Station - make sure you tell the MBTA employee who miracuously made it there for 4:30 a.m. that YOU think their pension is not well deserved.
Why does just about every thread come back to the topic of dogs? Some of you really need to take a hard look at your twisted view of life. For the most part, this website has become nothing more than a means for some of you to stir up trouble, insult people, ridicule, create tension between Townies and newcomers, and spread your negativity across the planet. Open your hearts and your minds, please!
Not sure if this is a second post, but my first meassage was sent to hell:( I'm surprised no one mentioned the cobblers, penny candy store, or Vinny's barbers at the bottom of Bond bread hill (Lowney way).
The Morning Glory, Snyders, and Scallis across from Santoro's on Chelsea Street(City Square).

How about the Blue Mirror at the Constitution.

The Skyway parking garage beside St. Mary's on Main Street.

Let's hardtop all the green area's around the town,(what ever is left that is).
Use it both for the dogs and parking... when the people that own the dogs come home from work, they will have a place to park and also take their dogs there to walk them.
It will be hardtop so it will be easy for them to pick up their mess also.
That way we solve two problems at once,Parking for visitors and illegal's(non-resident-residents)

To clarify---- People who do not have resident stickers, "but live here"!

And a place to take the dog's, and the city won't even have to cut the grass there,
Maybe! once a week the PUBLIC SECTOR WORKER---- The Street Sweeper could run thru all the lots to clean whatever the dog-owners left behind..

Just a thought!
poco, I agree with you 100%. It is no mystery that this state has an out-of-control public sector. It is really reprehensible. A lot of these 'workers' were only hired through family hack connections. Shocking!

To view the pensions/salaries of these state/public 'employees', visit the Herald's website. It makes for hours of entertainment...
Gimme a break. I'm getting pretty tired of reading on this board how dogs are the foulest creatures on this planet, responsible for all of societies problems - from destroying communities to causing global warming. I guess they are just a convenient scapegoat. The real blame lies elsewhere.

Eliminate Dogs, Not Cops and Firefighters!

What's Your Paw Print?
By ELIZABETH POWERS

One of the most liberal neighborhoods in America, zip code 10024, is where I live. It's full of people who carry cloth shopping bags, swear by fluorescent light bulbs, and think that George Bush is evil for not signing on to the Kyoto Protocol.

The neighborhood also ranks high in the nation in the number of pet food deliveries. The highest is the adjoining zip code, 10023. Parents and children now compete for space on the sidewalks and in the parks of the Upper West Side with the owners of medium- and large-sized dogs or, increasingly, of multiple small dogs. I wonder if these pet owners have calculated their dog's carbon paw print.

By this I mean the canine variation on "carbon footprint," a concept invented by environmentalists for measuring our energy consumption and, hence, our damage to the environment. The more energy we consume, so it is claimed, the more carbon dioxide we release into the atmosphere and, ergo, the more damage to the thermal equilibrium.

When we are not being told to hang out our laundry to dry, we are encouraged to visit Web sites where we can calculate our personal carbon footprint, based on household fuel use and travel. On the larger scale of things, the so-called Carbon Trust in Great Britain is trying to force companies to publish the size of the carbon footprint required to bring their products to market.

It is only by submitting to such behavior-modifying protocols, say the environmentalists, that the polar bears, the rain forest, and the earth itself can be saved. As with most seemingly well-intentioned but trendy projects, one can't help feeling that a great deal of obfuscation and hypocrisy is at work.

I'm not talking about Laurie David, living on Seinfeld royalties while traveling on her private Gulfstream jet to save the planet, or Al Gore, spending $30,000 a year on electricity for his 20-room house with a pool, but about my pet-rich neighbors on the Upper West Side.

According to the Waltham Centre for Pet Nutrition, a moderately active 80-pound dog requires 1,955 calories a day — the energy requirement of a 120-pound woman. A lactating dog of that weight requires between 3,900 and 7,800 calories daily.

Smaller dogs of, say, 20 pounds consume energy disproportionate to their weight compared to large dogs. Translated, that means two miniature poodles consume more than a German shepherd on the small side. So, when calculating one's carbon footprint, dog owners should add an extra individual, or two or three, to their household size.

While it is true that some of the carbon dioxide released into the environment as a result of the metabolism of pet food is renewable, the energetics required to produce this food fare — the factories, the delivery trucks, the metal for the cans — are often nonrenewable or renewable more in principle than in practice.

"Tin" cans, for instance, made of iron, require about half a pound of carbon, in the form of coke, per pound to manufacture. After use they go to the city dump, where they may or may not be recycled. Even the best metal-recycling systems recover only a fraction of the metal, while using huge amounts of nonrenewable energy in their operation.

Based on a report by MarketResearch.com, the American pet food market is experiencing healthy growth: "marketers continue to convert pet owners to better quality, higher priced, more upscale fare." This glowing report from October 2006 mentions the "bases" that premium pet food makers manage to cover: natural/organic, fortified/functional, weight control, breed-size specific, and gourmet, among others.

People who purchase organic pet food would hardly be so cruel as to leave Fido in a warm apartment in the summer months without air conditioning. Besides eight hours of cool air, don't forget to factor in the TV to keep him company, or the electric lights when he is home alone in the evening. In very round numbers, a single 6,000 British Thermal Unit air conditioner run for eight hours has the carbon footprint of .15 gallons of gas, which will drive a car for about 3 miles. Over its 10-year life span, a dog enjoying the benefits of air conditioning will consume about 150 gallons of fossil fuel — and that's assuming the system is operating at 100% efficiency.

And don't get me started on cats, which compete with humans in annually consuming millions of tons of various fish varieties from overfished seas.

This exposition is not about animals, however, but about the hypocrisy and willful ignorance of the liberal mindset.

After all, what is the point of feeding "natural/organic" food to animals that lick the behinds of other animals, drink from toilets, sniff up dirty curbs and sidewalks, and chew on shoes and rugs which contain dyes and other chemicals?

As with the cloth shopping bags, the fluorescent light bulbs, and the Kyoto Treaty, Upper West Siders want to appear virtuous, all the while polluting the ground under our feet and fouling the air we breathe.
With gas at $4 plus a gallon, it's time for a cut in taxes so we can afford the basics. I think we need to privatize more government services & cut back on unfair pensions. Like MBTA workers, for example, that job could be performed for lower wages with more productivity by a private company. Why don't we privatize the T, MassHighway & security at our public buildings and courthouses (no more court officers reading the Herald & drinking coffee like I saw at jury duty).....with tough times should come responsibility
I agree. Overdevelopment has to be addressed I wish the editor would dedicate a forum (in addition to the - general, crime, and real estate, to "public resident comment" for the neighborhood council and the BRA to take into consideration for specifically advertised upcoming developments and allow those who cannot make it to a public meeting, or who are self-conscious about standing up in a public forum to express their concerns to write in their comments.

Much of the development of the area is not initiated by people who live here, so they don't have to live with the impact of what they build.
Maybe....
what needs to happen is that one of you posters that think this a gangster wanna be problem, or think there is no problem, needs one of their family members harrassed by the young angels and see how they re-act.

I know for sure as for me, also being a LIFELONG townie that I would deal with it in a different way, I would certainly be after the parents and not just to talk to them....and also have their angels right there.

Sick of hearing "NOT MY BOY, HE WAS RIGHT HERE!"

Deal with the problem where it starts from...the home and Parents..
On the contrary, I am indded, a lifelong Townie. The 'gangsta' days may be over, but the 'gangsta-wanna-bes' are unfortunately spawning a new generation of disrespectfulness unthought of years ago. The truth is, many of these Townies are soooo jealous of the new-comers; many of which are decent people.
So, to sum up: I have lived in the town my whole life; these punks today have very little disciplne; the newcomers are often very nice people(and the woman are HOT!) and more has to be done to keep these punks in line.
I'm sorry but the only solution to the problem is the parents of these kids.
Why should anyone other than the parents be the one to deal with the problem.
So.... if you know these kids and or their parents, call 911 and have the police go directly to the parents home (not the kids)and address the problem that way..
YOU are not going to get any results by attacking the kids or saying anything to them!

One more thing be ready to IDENTIFY yourself, and not hide behind fictious names and postings.
